The rim lock (also called a tyre security bolt) clamps the tyre bead against the rim flange. With the low tyre pressures used off-road, it stops the tyre turning on the rim under braking and acceleration, which would eventually rip the valve out of the inner tube.

Key features

Nylon composite body coated in thermoplastic polyurethane, which cushions impacts and protects the inner tube from pinch flats.
Aluminium nut, bevelled washer and angled ribs that lock the tyre bead (patented system).

When to replace it?

Inner tube valve leaning over or torn off.
Rim lock pad worn or deformed, seized nut.
Fitting a new rim, or a second rim lock on a hard-working rear wheel.

Check that the rim lock nut is tight every time you fit a tyre and after the first few rides. The rim lock must match the rim width: check the sizes given in the product name.

Fitting tips

Insert the rim lock into the rim before fitting the tyre, stem through its hole, and start the nut on a few threads.
Fit the inner tube over the pad, then the tyre.
Inflate while pushing on the stem so the tyre bead slips over the pad, then tighten the nut.
Set the pressure and check that the valve is perfectly straight.

Why MOTION PRO?

Motion Pro was founded in California in 1984 by Chris Carter, a former trials and motocross racer and gold medallist at the ISDT (International Six Days Trial), and the brand started out with control cables. It holds more than 30 patents and develops its parts with riders and mechanics from AMA Supercross, motocross, GNCC and enduro.

Frequently asked questions

Is a rim lock useful with a mousse?
Yes: with a mousse (bib), the tyre runs at very low pressure and also needs to be locked to the rim.

Should I balance the wheel?
Off-road, it generally isn't done. Some riders place the rim lock opposite the valve to spread the weight.
