HELICOIL threading equipment

HELICOIL offers this threading equipment. When a bolt is overtightened or started at an angle, it often strips the thread in the aluminium of the engine or frame, and it no longer holds.

Why repair rather than replace?

The benefits:

• A crankcase, cylinder or frame saved for the price of an insert instead of a new part.
• A steel insert, stronger than aluminium, at the original bolt size: ideal for bolts that are removed often, such as the drain plug.
• Taps and dies in treated steel: they cut cleanly and restore a clean thread without tearing it.

The HELICOIL thread insert principle was patented in the USA in 1938; Böllhoff has made it under licence in Germany since the 1950s and has owned the trademark worldwide since 2021. The A2 stainless steel (1.4301) insert restores a true-to-gauge thread that resists wear and corrosion in soft metals such as the aluminium or magnesium of engine cases.

When should you replace this tool?

A tap or die that is dull, chipped or unusually stiff risks breaking in the part: replace it, and restock inserts as soon as the box runs low.

Cross-Mania tip: Check the exact diameter and pitch (M8 x 1.25 and M8 x 1 are not interchangeable), tap dead straight with cutting fluid and back off half a turn every turn to break the chip.
