VERTEX offers this piston ring set for GAS GAS EC 300, KTM EXC 300, YAMAHA YZ 250 and TM RACING EN 300 from 1999 to 2019. Rings are thin steel bands sitting in the piston grooves. They press against the cylinder wall to hold compression and scrape oil.

Why replace the rings?

The benefits:

• Regain compression and power.
• Reduce oil consumption and smoke.
• A cheap fix when piston and cylinder are still within spec.

Vertex has made its pistons in Italy since 1953 and has supplied KTM’s original pistons since 1996: molybdenum-disulphide coated skirt and Japanese rings. Its two-stroke pistons are cast from an 18 % silicon alloy. Its four-stroke pistons are forged from 2618 alloy.

When should you replace the piston rings?

Harder starting, loss of power, blue smoke, oil consumption or a knock when cold: these are the signs of a tired top end.

Recommended hours for new rings (manufacturer recommendation for the Yamaha YZ 250 two-stroke):

• Racing: every 7.5 h (about 3 races).
• Leisure: no Yamaha figure; Cross-Mania guideline: compression check at around 15 h.
• KTM EXC / XC-W, Husqvarna TE 250/300 2017-2023: racing: every 40 h.

Cross-Mania tip: Check the ring end gap in the cylinder before fitting and respect the fitting direction (mark facing up).
