The radiator cap keeps the cooling system under pressure. The higher the pressure, the later the coolant boils: a cap rated at a higher pressure delays boiling and limits coolant loss when the engine gets hot, on the start gate or in the mud.

Key features

Cap rated at 2.0 bar: according to Motocross Action magazine, this type of cap raises the coolant's boiling point by around 25 °C.

Specifications

Brand: CV PRODUCTS
Manufacturer part number: CV715-31M
Opening pressure: 2.0 bar

When to replace it?

Coolant escaping through the overflow.
Cap seal hardened, split or deformed.
Coolant boiling when stopped or at low speed, in the mud or at the start.

Replace the cap if its seal is damaged or if the system loses coolant with no visible leak. A high-pressure cap also raises the pressure the hoses and radiators have to withstand: they must be in good condition.

Fitting tips

Engine cold only: never open a hot system, the pressurised coolant can cause serious burns.
Check the radiator filler neck: it must be clean, with no burrs or deformation.
Check the coolant level, then fit the new cap and turn it until it stops.
After the first ride, check for leaks at the hoses and radiators.

Frequently asked questions

Which pressure should I choose?
The opening pressure is given in the name and specifications; the stock pressure is in your bike's manual. A cap rated at a higher pressure delays boiling.

Is a high-pressure cap worthwhile on my bike?
Mainly if the engine loses coolant when it gets hot (starts, mud, slow terrain). If the bike doesn't run hot, a stock cap in good condition is enough.
