The intake gasket seals between the intake manifold, the reed valve block or the throttle body and the engine. A leak here lets in unmetered air: the engine runs lean, the idle becomes unstable and the engine runs hot.

When to replace it?

• Unstable idle or idle that creeps up on its own, hanging revs.
• Engine running hot or pinking: mixture too lean.
• Gasket crushed or split on removal.

Every time the intake manifold or reed valve block is removed, and as soon as an air leak is suspected.

Fitting tips

1. Clean the gasket faces without scratching them.
2. Fit the gasket dry and properly centred.
3. Tighten the screws in a criss-cross pattern, gradually, to the manufacturer's torque.
4. Check the air filter and the intake boot: a crack lets in dust and unmetered air.
