A sealing washer works by deforming just once: as it crushes, it moulds itself to both surfaces and fills the tiniest irregularities. When to replace it?

• Weeping or a drip under a drain plug or banjo bolt.
• Washer already crushed, marked or deformed when you remove it.
• Oil change, bleeding or line replacement: the washer is changed every time.

Fit a new washer every time you remove the plug or bolt, as workshop manuals specify. Note its inner diameter (the bolt size: 8, 10, 12, 14 mm…), its outer diameter, its thickness and the original material.

Fitting tips

1. Clean the seat on the casing and under the bolt head: a bit of old washer stuck there will stop the new one sealing.
2. Lay the new washer perfectly flat, centred on the bolt.
3. Tighten to the torque in the manual: the washer has to crush, but overtightening strips the thread in the casing, especially in aluminium.
4. Check for weeping after the first start-up or the first bleed.
