The free piston works with every movement of the fork. Once scored or tired, it lets oil past and the damping becomes inconsistent: a new complete piston puts the cartridge back in shape.

Fitting tips

3. Fit the new part, oiled, without twisting it or damaging it on the threads.
4. Reassemble with fresh fork oil and carefully bleed the air out of the cartridge.
