To compensate, many engines have a balance shaft: a shaft with an off-centre weight, driven by the crankshaft, which turns so as to cancel out part of this shaking.

Cross-Mania tip: Heat the crankcase to remove and fit the bearings without forcing them, and line up the timing marks between the balance shaft gear and the crankshaft gear on reassembly.
