Why choose a tyre suited to your ground?

The benefits:

• More drive in the slop: a soft-terrain tyre (mud, sand, loose dirt) has tall, widely spaced knobs that bite and shed the mud, but it wears quickly on hard ground.
• More grip and longer life on dry ground: a hard-terrain tyre has lower, more closely spaced knobs, but it clogs up faster in mud.

When should you replace the tyre?

Rounded, split or torn knobs, or cracked or cut sidewalls: it needs replacing. In racing, it is changed as soon as the knob edges are no longer sharp; for leisure riding, at the latest when the knobs have lost about half their height. The rear wears faster than the front, and a tyre stored for several years hardens, even if it has never been ridden.
